Mulled pears

This would do as either a dessert or as a breakfast fruit and is really just a variation of poached pears, inspired by this Christmas season.  It is best to use firmer pears so they don't disintegrate while cooking
  • pears, whole but peeled - as many as you want to cook
  • 50g ish caster sugar
  • 1 star anise
  • half cinnamon stick
  • 5-6 whole cloves
  • couple of slices/ chunks of orange
  1. Place the pears in a heavy based pan.  Cover with water.
  2. Add the sugar, star anise, cinnamon and cloves.  Squeeze the juice out of the orange and throw in the slices/ chunks for good measure and extra flavour.
  3. Bring to the boil then reduce heat and simmer for about half an hour,  or until the pears are tender when you put a knife in carefully.  Leave the lid off so that the liquid reduces and thickens.
  4. Take off the heat, leave to cook and serve with natural yoghurt or cream.
